Japanese Men’s Fashion
We know Japan as a country associated with culture, tradition, customs, history and heritage. We also know the country as the technological capital of the world but very few know that Japan is a very fashionable country as well.
Yes, you heard that right. People in Japan, both men and women, are extremely fashion conscious and also have an innate sense of style. Style comes naturally to the Japanese and while office goers are mostly seen clad in boring suits but youngsters like teenagers and young men set out sporting really smart, chic and modern clothes. The clothes men sport do have an American touch to them. They sport American casuals also known as ‘americaji’ in Japanese. Boys in Shibuya also sport a more feminine rock look. If you really want to check out what fashion is all about, you must visit a few fashion districts in Tokyo like Harajuku, Shibuya and Daikanyama.
Recently, the men’s fashion world has witnessed a new trend of wearing shirts on top of t-shirts, tied like sashes. They tie the shirt or another item of clothing over one shoulder like a tasukigake. This look is extremely lackadaisical and now also seen in the world of women’s fashion. Japanese fashion clothing is inspired from the fashion capitals of the world. Men follow all the trends that are current on the runways and streets of Paris, Milan and New York City.
Men in Japan also like taking care of their hair a lot. That is exactly why you will find many Japanese hair care products in the market. They always like to keep their hair in place whether they are office goers or teenagers. Also, you will hardly find Japanese men with facial hair. Most men have trouble growing a proper beard and many think that the beard won’t go with their image. In Japan, a full grown beard is usually a sign that the person is into radical politics.
Men wearing shorts in Japan is not a common sight in Japan. They think that is not sophisticated or cultured to bare your legs in public. Japan is a very fashionable place wear new trends are always hitting the fashion districts but this is one style, Japanese men do not sport as it is looked down upon in society. You may still find a few men in the countryside wearing shorts but in the city or classy and posh places, you absolutely will not find men wearing shorts and bearing their calf. However, if you are a foreigner, you can wear shorts on the streets of Japan.
The young men who do sport this style tend to wear a longer variety of this piece of clothing. You will find men roll up they pant cuffs to ‘manpries’ which is slightly more acceptable than shorts. Wearing shorts at home or at the beach is acceptable but not in full public view. You will see most Japanese men wear full length pants. Japanese men’s fashion is influenced by the west but they do not ape them completely.
